Not quite sure who you are but I like the blog. I wondered if you had any thoughts on how the Ontario government could improve the tax system to help companies in desparate need of capital. I am trying to compare the Quebec system with Ontario but… what is Ontario’s report card like?

    Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for your comment. We believe that Ontario fairs quite well in comparison to Quebec in terms of tax credits and government run grant programs, although in absolute terms Quebec’s incentives are slightly more generous. For example, qualified Ontario-based companies can receive SR&ED tax credits of approximately 73% of eligible labour expenditures, while in Quebec, comparable tax credits can be as high as 82%.

Both Ontario and Quebec offer many provincially-run “niche” and industry-specific programs. While some programs are somewhat similar, overall they are not the same and are usually aimed at advancing political and public policy agendas of the provincial government. So depending on the industry and other factors at play, either province may turn out to be more generous towards a specific industry.

Having said this, many other factors such as access to talent, infrastructure, compliance costs and cost of doing business in general should all be considered when deciding on where to start a new business. Note that British Columbia is also quite competitive when it comes to government tax incentive and grant programs, and BC SR&ED incentives are quite similar to those of Ontario.

Mobile Capital Network is a strategy consulting firm that helps small to medium businesses navigate and access the world of Canadian tax incentive and grant programs. If you would like more detail regarding this topic, feel free to give us a call.

    Thank you!
